Insert Openings

Insert/Modify MEP Openings – inserts openings according to "Read Interference Check Data" results, saved as an .xml file. This file provides information for opening placement (coordinates and elevations) and additional information, such as cut offsets, opening joining configurations, and any other data from the configuration.

Please browse the .xml file and press the "Next" button. This will lead you to the next steps of insertion of openings.

This opening insertion can be activated in the project containing any elements described in the selected .xml file.

Opening Insertion Table

Please read the "Controlling the Opening Table" post to learn more about controlling the opening table.

This table can be used to:

  • Review openings that will be inserted into the BIM model;

  • Filter the openings to be inserted

  • Select Opening families to be inserted

  • Insert Openings

  • Use functions of Dynamic Section Box and Show Host to find elements in the model;

Choose Opening families to be inserted

By default, Cut Opening comes with the library of 6 opening families:

Round Face Opening

Round Face Opening Solid

Round Face Opening with Sleeve

Round Face Opening Solid with Sleeve

Rectangle Face Opening

Rectangle Face Opening Solid

Regular openings can be inserted in Structural and Architectural models to create voids. Solid openings can be inserted in MEP models as the opening placeholders to represent the areas that must be cut.

Opening families are saved on users' computers and can be modified if needed. Additionally, users can place in said folder their own opening families that Cut Opening will be able to insert. There are two main rules for the Cut Opening to see the user-added elements:

The opening location on the computer: C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\TOOLS 4 BIM\2023\Cut Opening\23.15.10721.0\Cut Opening\Libraries

Areas marked in Red will vary, depending on the user Name on the computer, the Revit version used, and the Cut Opening version installed.

Toggleable functions

Dynamic Section Box – a function that allows users to find clashing elements as a place where an opening will be inserted. This feature crops the view to see only those elements that the users need;

Show Host – toggles the host element’s visibility in the table.

Inserting Openings

After the table is set up and the required interferences are filtered in the table, click on "Insert/Modify" button to insert the openings. After the openings are inserted, you will receive a notification message.

Additionally, all the inserted openings in the organization tree will move from "Create New Opening" to "Created Openings".

After the openings are inserted, users can browse their parameters in the table, as well as use the "Import/Export Excel" tool to collect or change the opening parameters conveniently.
